Breakdown of Requirements for BCBA Supervision

The BACB updates their documents frequently. Make sure you are familiar with the most current information which can be found at BACB.com. Also, all details are found here on the Experience Standards from their site. This is just a summary for simplification. These standards are in effect until December 31, 2021.

Requirements to Begin Supervision

  1. Start qualifying coursework (you can accrue hours after the first day of class)
  2. Secure a qualified Supervisor
    • ♦ BCBA/BCBA-D
    • ♦ Completed 8-hour supervision course
  3. Sign a Supervision Contract: Written contract must be developed and signed at the beginning of the supervisory relationship.

Experience Types

Independent Fieldwork

1500 hours
  • ♦ Accrue 20-130 per month
  • ♦ Supervised for 5% of hours
  •   (75 Hours total)
  • ♦ 2 contacts per month
  • ♦ 2 observations per month

BCaBA = 1000 Accrued Hours

Practicum Within VCS

1000 hours
  • ♦ Accrue 20-130 per month
  • ♦ Supervised for 7.5% of hours
  •   (75 Hours total)
  • ♦ 4 contacts per month
  • ♦ 4 observations per month

BCaBA = 670 Accrued Hours

Intensive Practicum Within VCS

750 hours
  • ♦ Accrue 20-130 per month
  • ♦ Supervised for 10% of hours
  •   (75 Hours total)
  • ♦ 8 contacts per month
  • ♦ 4 observations per month

BCaBA = 500 Accrued Hours

Supervision Structure & Rules

Individual vs Group Supervision
  •   ♦ Individual = You & Supervisor ♦ Must be at least 50% of your hours each month
  •   ♦ Group = Supervisor & 2-10 trainees ♦ Must be less than 50% of your hours each month
Restricted vs Unrestricted Hours
  •   ♦ Restricted = 50% or less of your hours over entire experience
  •   ♦ Unrestricted = 50% or more of your hours over entire experience
Accrued Hours
  •   ♦ Independent hours (supervisor absent) + Supervised hours (supervisor present) = Total accrued hours

Engage in activities to increase competence in the areas on the BCBA/BCaBA Task List

Unrestricted Activities

  • • Observation & data collection
  • • Training staff or caregivers on ABA programs/content
  • • Conducting Assessments for behavioral intervention
  • • Conducting behavioral assessments (FBA, preference)
  • • Meeting with clients about ABA programs
  • • Data graphing & analysis
  • • Research literature relevant to client’s programming
  • • Writing/revising behavior programs

Restricted Activities

  • • Direct Services
  • • Delivery of therapeutic and instructional procedures

Unacceptable Activities

  • • Meetings with little behavioral content
  • • Implementing non-ABA procedures
  • • Administrative duties
  • • Non-behavioral trainings
  • • Non-behavioral assessments and paperwork
  • • Attending conferences, workshops, courses
  • • Academic assignments

This section is important because if you are ever audited by the BACB you must produce the documents within 7 days!
